Religious and Worldviews
(RWV)

RWV at The Woodlands

Early Years

In Reception, we begin to explore religion, beliefs and traditions through familiar experiences. We discover how people celebrate special festivals such as Christmas and Easter, and learn about places and objects that are special to different people. We ask questions, share our ideas and discover what makes celebrations and places meaningful.

Years 1 and 2

In Years 1 and 2, our Religious and Worldviews Curriculum explores Christianity and Judaism, with an introduction to Islam in Year 2. Children develop their understanding through stories, discussion, questions and practical experiences.

We have strong links with our local churches, giving children opportunities to welcome members of the church into school and visit places of worship. We also welcome visitors from the local Jewish community, who share their knowledge and experiences with the children through engaging workshops.

Years 3 and 4

In Years 3 and 4, we broaden and deepen children’s understanding of different religions and worldviews.

In Year 3, children explore Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism. In year 4, they build on this learning by exploring Sikhism and Buddhism, as well as beginning to consider Humanism as a non-religious worldview.

Children develop their understanding through stories, discussion, questions and practical experiences. They are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, make connections between different beliefs and consider how beliefs can influence the way people live.

Our strong links with local churches continue to enrich children’s learning, alongside opportunities to visit places of worship, we also welcome visitors from a Multi-Faith Centre, who provide engaging workshops that allow children to learn about and experience different religions traditions and worldviews.

Years 5 and 6

In Years 5 and 6, our Religious and Worldviews curriculum brings together and builds upon the learning children have developed throughout their time at primary school. Children revisit and deepened their understanding of the six major world religions explored across our curriculum, alongside a growing focus on Humanism and other non-religious worldviews.

At this stage, we aim for children to become increasingly confident in exploring different beliefs and practised, comparing perspectives, analysing ideas and making connections between religious and noon-religious worldviews. They are encouraged to think deeply, ask thoughtful questions and reflect on their own opinions and beliefs, while recognising that people may hold different views.

Our strong links with local churches continue to enrich children’s learning. By the end of Year 6, our curriculum aims for children to be equipped to approach different religions and worldviews with curiosity, respect and an open mind.

Parents have the right to withdraw children from all or part of the RE curriculum.

If you would like to do this, then please contact the school office. Alternative work would be planned for this time in the curriculum.
